36

It is a wacky thing when you reach an age that you remember your parents being…I guess because they were always “old”. Well, today I turned 36 and I remember my mom when she was this age. Really an interesting feeling.

I thought about doing the shirtless Devany photo but I might save that for 40…or 50! I will self indulge a little and mention some recent PR’s. Some are quite a bit off my all time best but we shall see if I can get back to those.

Body weight-170lbs

Squat-345lbs

DL-425

Standing press- 165lbs

Over Head Squat- 245lbs (thanks to Kelly Starrett for kicking my ass thorugh that session).

Clean & Jerk- 265lbs

Snatch-185lbs

Fran-3:48

Diane-3:41

Mary-14 rounds

Max pull-ups kipped-62

weighted pull-up-BW+120lbs

Not spectacular but not terrible either.

Outside of training I do work that I love and that I feel makes the world a better place. I have a hot Italian wife and a cat that sits on my chest while a nap on the couch…said another way I have a blessed life that I am grateful for. Looking forward to 37.

Could you tell us a bit about your average daily caloric intake…..your preferred macronutrient % breakdown….and if you already do so, can you link us to your “Fit Day” daily food log?

Happy Birthday and thanks for the great posts! I am of a similar age and have been having many of the same thoughts that you have expressed. Your PRs are awesome and you should be very proud.

Just a last thought: I think that you should do a shirtless photo to celebrate in De Vany style and maybe you could talk your hot Italian wife into doing the same….LOL.

    Brad-
I like your angle here! It will (unfortunately) be a cold day in hell before Nicki allows a topless photo of her on my blog. We can all hope though! Thanks for the kind words.

im gonna go ahead and guess with a 245 max ohs youve got the 15 bw ohs in the bag, too. jeez … no, not terrible numbers at all.

    HB – go big!

    EC-
I actually just did the 15 x BW OHS…the day after the 245. I never messed with that much but what a great standard.

  15. Ari says:

What sort of program have you followed for most of this training? CF? CF with mass gain? PM?

    Thanks.

    Ari-
I’ve been doing basic CF WOD’s MWF but at the beginning of each session I do a brief strength session consisting of either squats, DL’s, presses or weighted pull ups. tues/thurs I do gymnastics focusing on ring work and tumbling. If I’m torched from other activities I will drop tue/thur and just do mobility work, foam rolling etc. I really like working the OL’s but it has irritated the hell out of my hips so I have to meeter that out in small doses.

  16. Jeff Belyeu says:

Wow, Robb. You are very humble, but IMHO those are some great numbers, regardless of age (I turned 37 just last month). Happy birthday, and many more.

Happy Birfdee Robb! I am forever grateful for having met you n Nicki. To go from passing out green on a jump rope to DL 240 ..I’m pretty sure you’ve saved my life….Thank you.

    Dain-
Actually…thank YOU. You were one of those rare clients who actually did what we asked of them (gave the paleo thing a shot), saw the results and have never stopped improving. On more than one day when Nicki and I wondered aloud “why are we doing this again?” we remembered…Dain. You kick ass at NorCal and beyond amigo…I’m very proud of the progress you have made.
    Robb

  19. Scott Kustes says:

Happy birthday Robb! 8 years older than me and kicking my ass in nearly every category…at 15 lbs lighter. Glad to hear that life is everything you want it to be. There’s no other way to live!

    Cheers

Great meeting you at the cert. Guys your age
ispired those of us who don’t quit yet have that much gray. Keep up the work man… you are a badass.

  23. Sarena says:

Happy Bday!! And thanks for your wishes for my 46th yesterday!
I finally let go for a bit. My CF buddies (like 15 or so) took me out to dinner! I ate a good meal (guac, salmon, veggies) but did indulge n some dessert without their twisting my arm!! No alcohol, yes nightshades. I really needed to do this.

One girl got me 2 Ts
    1) Put down the carbs and no one gets hurt
    2) Don’t I look too young to be a grandmother!!

    Sarena-
Good for you girl! this whole thing is not about perfection…just the journey and learning. You will not loose your health by kicking up your heels and indulging a bit. Although I did wake up under a bush on the Chico State campus once waaay back in the day…good times!
    Robb

  24. Rob McBee says:

    Happy B-day Robb!

Another year older proves to be another year better in your case. Those numbers are truly inspiring.

    Rob

Thanks Rob! I usually do my b-day workout clean & jerk BW X age. Last saturday I strained my wrist cleaning at the GSX cert so that will have to wait. The B-day WO encourages me to stay lite, strong…and lie like a bastard about my age!
    Robb

  25. Rutman says:

  27. Fortunately with Robb’s extraordinary attention to optimal health, he will likely outlive all of our grandchildren after outlifting them and then kicking their faces in.

Don’t wait too long for the shirtless pic like DeVany though.
    Congrats again!

    Leo-
I may regret mentioning that shirt thing!
    Robb

  37. Max pull-ups kipped-62

    That’s impressive.

You should really start a shirtless photo chronology where you compare yourself to Art’s photo. You could entitle it “Robb imitating Art” or something. You could also pepper it with comments about how much chicks dig you and all that stuff. Just a suggestion.

    John-
I need to run with your suggestions but I REALLY need to work in a line about White Teeth. I’ll think on this…
    Robb

  38. Murph says:

    Happy B-day Robb!

  39. john vernon says:

36 huh? I’m not buying. Happy Birthday anyway…whatever age you REALLY are.

  40. Rob,
Quick question… when a client of yours experience weight loss of about 30 lbs and strength increases… is it possible to lose muscle mass?

    Michael-
Generally if we see an increase in strength we at least have maintaince in muscle mass if not an increase. Similarly, weight loss (I’m guessing we are talking fat loss) is usually accompanied by some muscle increase. let me know if that helps.
    Robb

  41. Derek Simonds says:

    Happy 36 Robb!

I would agree your PR’s and your Humbleness are both extraordinary.

    Best wishes Derek

  42. Ron Nelson says:

    Happy B-Day Wolfy.
A mere 10 years younger than me. You should hope you look as good as me in 10 years.
Hope you had a paleo cake, which probably resembles meat loaf (not the singer).

    Ron-
It was actually wheat free beer, and dark chocolate covered almonds…tough morning the following day!
    Robb

  43. Petr R. says:

    Hi Robb,
    happy birthday :o )
Those are great numbers btw, so I have 2 years to catch your PR’s… Close to impossible :o )
    Petr
